Goodbye and Hello

This will be the last post on the Barococo blog. Many things have changed for me over the last year, some of them to do with this blog, but I am different now, no longer in touch with the frivelous activity in this blog and so it will be retired. I thank all of you who've commented, both positive and negative. The comments were always helpful. A new bliog will appear, but I don't know when, but I'll stay in touch with a daily journal under the name, CHOP WOOD, CARRY WATER sometime soon. So long, farewell until we meet again.

Something has begun. I'm not sure what, but I'm int5igued. I contginue to work with crayons and metallic paints and acrylics (three primaries.) I'm eorking on white, undyed cotten, and fdyed (MX dyes) muslin, developing the surfaces as a basis for small embroideries or perhaps laces. I'm working small as I'm working by hand as the machine and I are having difficulty connecting because of the tremours and twisting my body has received as a result of the progression of the disesae. the love of fabric and color and stitch keep me functioning aat a higher level than I might otherwise. Is there meaning in the work that's emerging? I think yes, but it is close and personal and perhap a little elusive. a new sample just painted and beginning embroidery on the first sample.

FascinationI have alwaays had a fascination for fabrics and flowers, particularly fabrics with somestructure like velvets and satins and for roses. My sketchbook is filling up with drwings in crayon asnd paint and oil pstel of roses some baesed on photos from the garden 9of my friend Sallyl who kindly gaze me permission to use as a source. Many yeaars agoi I became enamoured of Irish Crochet lace and one of the motifs I make well is a rose. I'm working on doing a series of digital and fabric designs using roses and hopefully incorporating some crochet lace. I've been recently studying the techniques of various needle laces, psarticulxarly the Italian punto aria and other (my Italian is not much better than my AEnglish. Multi-technique fiber p8eces can carry a strong message, I think, even a subtle one. I am more fond of the subtle message than I am of the sledgehammer approaach. In the meantime, I'm using a sketchbook along a specific theme, something I've never done before. My health is worsening and I wonder if suddenly I realize that I need to start finishing works aw I dicovered to my chagrin that I dod not have a true "body of work," just a bunch of UFOs. Os ther ultimate finished oject more important than the process9or is the process the most importantg/ I've lways thought the latter, but now I'm beginning to think that they're both important, though I can't honestly say why at this point. here are two samples of crayon on ctton with a metallic over wash.

A SERMON ON COMPASSION

If any human wae truly in touch with the heart and mind of God, whatever his or her name, there would be no sects, no religions, no politiccal parties, and no strife. Original Sin is the knowledge of the separateness from God, rather than at-oneness with him or her. But instead of seeking to return to that original state of mindfullness or grace, we have become angry at ourselves and each other and seek to punish rather than save or care fore each other. Compassion is the origional commandment of God, and we have forgotten that, and we seek to tell each other how to live rather than just living with each other. There is no true religion, no true political belief, no true way to live, only compassion and understanding. We are one species, not several, and if we and our beloved mother earth are to survive, we must all stop, seek the silence within ourselves, and reach out to our neighbors in hope and extend the branch of peacc. We must forget ourselves and our personal pride and remember compassion..

GOOD ART, BAD ART,OR NOT ART

Artmidter raises gay questions in her blog post today. Art entered into quietly shows is jusdged As quilts one would presume, and one would wonder about as point ystrfem anyway. I entered an art quilt into a small lofal show and received an honorable mention, one judge really liked its, and two were lukewarm WIth tgh pointgw. Its was the only Artists quilt entered into the show an was classified among small applique quilts. How does one judge art? Who is to pronounce ArT judgments which are to be takin as valid? What is the artists to think when confronted with a points systens? Does that mean that we should carefully construct our quilts according to that system so we could receive higher scores? Should we even enter our work into such venues? We all crave feedback and critique, but are judge's comments genuine critique? Is the artist testament to be taken seriiously, or should the art stand on it's own, and can it really do so in such venues? Is surface design art? Is Art Cloth valid as "art" or is it all wishful thinking? Matissese would ceertainly classify tfextiles as art, but I'm not sure about Picasso, and do other opinions even count? I cannot even pretend to have the answers. I would agree with American fiber artist Katherine Westphal who said, "Art is whatever we (artiets) say it is."

I've been very pensive the last few days, for many reasons, some apparent, some not so apparent. I find my thinking somewhat clouded and redundant at times, but an occasional flash appears through the fog. But the sunlight does not always reveal anything like a clear purpose. This is the third attempt at writing this post. My work hs alwasy been very formal about the issues of design, color and layering of media to produce something coherent and aesthetically pleasing or stimulating. I must confess that I do not pretend to any great thought or earth-shattering meaning in my work, but I hope that a richness of content and meaning by reduction appears to the viewer. If it is meaniningful to you in some way, then I have been successful, or most likely, the process has occasionally struck gold. The digital paintings are built layer upon layer upon layer until the original layer is no longer recognizable. Art is somewhat like archaeology, meaning becomes more apparent as the layers are stripped away in the latter, and the opposite occurs in the process of art as layers are added. So for me, art is a reverse archaeology, an archaeology of the soul, a methodology of the spirit. There, I've done it again/ Another feeble attempt at rational thought in an attempt to shd some light into the shadows. Thanks for listening. Please do not laugh too loudly but do enjoy it. I often, as a lot of us do, escape into a personal world of depression, self-loathing, and distrust of my own process. Art is, as art does, and I lnow I should let it flow but sometimes, I want to be intelledtual and I'm not very good at it, so if these pensiuve moments provide amusement, I'm too dense to care.

I am fascinated by Zen thought and my titltle is taken from a book of the same name I once read. The preimise was that we have no head becsuse we are on th ineie looking out. Well, we lopk in a mirrror and we find a ontradiction. Cocteau felt, as I read him at one oint, that mirrors were an entrance into an alternate reality and not a reflection of the real world.

Now I'm back into the flow. I seek the directnes of color and the beastish apporoach of the Fauvist, and then I seek the lost language that would lead me tto personal truuth. If you want a truthful approach to this, read Artmixter anytime.

while I slither and gyre, she goes to the heart. I follow and listen and things become right again.

I may or may not have a head, but I do have a heart. Now to reconnect to it.

I've been playing with Flame Fractals recently using aewonderffrulo program that is free called Apophysis 2.02 the first image is the fractsl as it comes directly from the generating program, the sedond is the fradal after I played with it awhile in PSP and the third is a final digital print create4d by using various techniques, including overlapiping the original image and the generated images. I'm using these images as a basis for\ embroidery and quilts and experientation. I'm keeping a sketchbook and I'll publish some of those pages later probably on Digital Technic

It is no easy thing, living. but it is a harder thing giving in to the darkness. Every act of creation becomes an affirmation of the light. One portrayal of the Tree of Life in the Jewish Kabalah as outlinde in pre-medieval texts is portrayed as the Ladder of Lights. At the top of the ladder is the Light Without Limit, and that is what I believe we may be strivfing for when we create. Do we hope to become one with the piece on which are work8ng and having a conversation with it as well as with the media with which we are working, and sometimes the conversations coialesce and there is a new meaning derived from the two. Being a stranger to others sometine creates a situation where one is a stranger to oneself. Do we know where we're going. Most likely not. Do we need to know. I'm not sure. It is a sad thing that now, the older one gets, the more isolated one becomes from the society in which one is trying to live. Things have changed so much and few mutual reference points exist as the sequel generations have been educated differently and one has to to a long way to find people who've had anything near a classical education. Does tht make things wrong. No, yes, I'm not sure. It is hard to find people who read anymore, or have read any of the books I'v read, the works of Octavio Paz, the poetry of Neruda, the work of Milan Kundera, and other European and Asian writers. I'm not sure if this is because I live in the uSA, and this situatuion may not be prevalent in other parts of the world.

I often observe that the largest of things in the Universe are reflected in the smallest, and I find it true in the landscape of Earth. Nature, the greatest and most prolific pattern generator we know, often repeats segments of pattern over and over, sometimes on a grand scale, sometimes on a small. Playing with my digital camera today, I noted the cracked earth after the dryi up from a recent rain reminded me immediately of a river delta, so I took some photos and played with them digitally and this is what came up.

I am a litle sad this morning. I was denied memberfship in the group Freemotions on Yahoo for unexplained reasons. I'm sure the moderators had their reasons but they were not explained. The denial was cold, indifferent and disappointing, but life is that way. I really wish I knew why, but I may just have to settle for the indifference. I've been undergoing some new treatments for the side effects of Parkinsons Disease and I[m happy to report that for the first time in years I'm able to hold my head erect and my neck isn't twisted with dystonia anymore and is getting better. Still a ways to go yet, but now I see a glimmer of hope fof leading a relatively normal life in my future.

All artists talk about their process or at least think about talking about it. What gets incorporated into the process? Everything, I think. e.g. fr the first time since I was diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease, thoughts of suicide (they'r not too serious at this point and probably wont be, but they have surfaced. so now I must face them). the highest suicide rate of this type is among men with parkinsons. How can one explain this. Imagine that you are looking out on a world that seems and looks the ssme as it always has but then stand outside yourself and see what others are seeing. To your horror, you discover that you no longer look familiar, your facial muscles dont work, when you talk, even your own mother can't understand you, and suddenly you see it in their eyes. They csan no longer face you, they pretend it isnt happenng and there you are, trappped inside a body that is no longer your own, and the UNBEARABLE LIGHTGNESS OF BEING closes in on you, and suicide , a word you couldnt spell before, comes up, then sinks away if you just let it pass. But the silence is hard, and difficult but you endure it and go on.

You mean I'm supposed to think? Gosh, I'd been thinking about the incredible beauty, and simplicity of Quantum Physics which I am told is everything Einstein forgot to include in his theories. Yet, I dont really understand it completely. It has a quality that speaks to the well of my creativity, but does not explain itself. I started with drawing some random lines with a paint tool, then I added some gradent coloring and layer blending. I work in direct reponse to what is happening on the screen just as I do when working on cloth or canvas. It really isn't any different except for the tactile qualities of the real vs virtual media. The wonderful thing about the digital medium is that I can go back to an earlier version if I don't like the finish point determined by what pathway I take and the choices are myriad. This cannot be done when working with real media. I'll think some more and maybe do a blog later on it.
